Floating Stencils in Visio

When you first load stencils from the menu or toolbar they are automatically placed in a dedicated stencil pane on the left hand side of the Visio window. Stencils can be floated anywhere on the desktop by positioning the mouse cursor on the top bar of the stencil window, right clicking and choosing "Float" from the popup menu. Locate the mouse cursor in the top bar of the floating stencil window. You can now click and drag to move the stencil to a convenient location.

Position the mouse cursor over the window borders. Move the cursor to the window corners. You will notice how the cursor changes appearance. The arrow cursors that appear indicate the direction that the borders can be moved by clicking and dragging to resize the stencil window.

The stencil can be re-docked in the dedicated stencil pane by dragging the floating window to the lefthand side again. The phantom outline will snap into position when you approach the lefthand side of the drawing window. Releasing the mouse button at this point will dock the stencil window in it’s default location.
