Background Layers in Visio Technical

A background page in Visio is a page that can be made to appear behind another drawing page. It can can have layers like any other drawing and can also be shared with other drawing pages.

Layers are a key tool in controlling visibility of drawing elements and using layers on background sheets is a great way to provide consistent information between drawings, yet provide control over what is seen on each sheet. For example:

In a drawing where the same map is used on multiple pages, you can put the map on a background page arranging its different parts on various layers, such as the Road layer and the River layer. If you need to conceal various layered elements on any page, you simply turn off the appropriate layer(s) on that drawing page.

A drawing that has a title block or revision panel on the background sheet, these elements could be assigned to a Title or Revision layer on the background sheet. This make it easy to turn them off it they are not required on other drawing sheets.

Your background sheet may include information that you do not want altered such as the company logo or such like. However you need to share these drawings with your clients. Assigning these elements to a Corporate layer on the background sheet and then locking the layer allows you to confidently pass the file on.
