DWG to DWF

Tips & Techniques

IntelliCAD, DWG, DWF, Whip!, Whip-n-Post!, Docupoint

IntelliCAD 98 does not support Autodesk's DWF file format. Furthermore, it is unlikely that it ever will, as Visio is pursuing a vector graphics format for the Web in association with Microsoft. (see Proposed New Vector Graphics Format for the Web)

The DWF format is popularly used for making DWG files available on the Web. It provides a compact file size, a vector-based image and a selection of user-level image controls. The Whip! plug-in enables viewing in Netscape Navigator and MS Internet Explorer browsers.

However, using a recently released tool from Docupoint, you can convert DWG files created with IntelliCAD (or any other application that creates DWG files) to DWF.

The software is called Whip-n-Post! (kinda got a nice ring to it) and it is available as a free download to from http://www.docu-point.com until 31 August 1998. Downloaders are required to register with Docupoint before making the downlaod.

Whip-n-Post! will convert DWG files (IntelliCAD 98, AutoCAD Ver. 2.6 to R14 or other compatible DWG generators) to DWF files  in batch mode. It can convert large quantities of drawings to DWF format with ease.

You must have the appropriate WHIP! Version 3.x plug-in viewer installed for your browser.  It can be downloaded from http://www.autodesk.com/products/whip/reg3.htm
