AutoSaved Data

Tips & Techniques

IntelliCAD,AutoSave, SV$, DWG

IntelliCAD 98 includes an AutoSave feature that periodically saves open DWGs to corresponding SV$ files to preserve data in the event of an unexpected exit from IntelliCAD. SV$ files are automatically cleaned up (deleted) when the relevant DWG file is closed correctly in IntelliCAD.

You can set the AutoSave interval between automatic saves in Tools > Options. The default is 60 minutes (Help erroneously says it is 30 minutes) and setting the interval to 0 (zero) disables AutoSave.

The default extension is .SV$, but you can make it anything you like.

Do not set the AutoSave interval too low or you will waste more time waiting for IntelliCAD to AutoSave than it is worth. This is particularly important if you work on large files or with several drawings open simultaneously.

The SV$ format is an archived DWG format. In the event that you need to access it and use it as a DWG file you must untoggle the archive flag and rename the file…

Remove the archive flag

  1. Highlight the file in a directory window
  2. Right click on the file to display a file options menu
  3. Select properties
  4. Uncheck the "Archive" flag
  5. Click "OK"

Rename the file

  1. Highlight the file in a directory window
  2. Right click on the file to display a file options menu
  3. Select "Rename"
  4. Change SV$ to DWG
  5. Press "Enter"
